Of Rolfing, Bank Accounts and Wine Work


What a week. I know there's more stress at the Day Job as my left shoulder is playing up again - it gets knotted under duress. This can be quite painful. About a year again it flared up so bad I had to sleep sitting up and ate painkillers at night. A technique called Rolfing finally sorted this out. Rofling is a very deep muscle and tendon manipulation. It will release the film that surrounds all muscles etc, which can go as hard as steel. The Rofler also realinged my pelvis, which then improved posture/balance and my body was able to adjust into a better alignment. It was painful at times. At one point his hands felt like they had pushed through my groin and were touching the base of my spine. But it worked. So, I have to exercise so my muscles, especially the back, can hold the good work he did. My Rolfer is Michael Lucas (has a practice on 5th Ave, Columbus) and he Rolfed the US Olympic swin team for the Greece Olympiad. Apparently Rolfing will help reshape and further streamline a swimmer's body. Amazing stuff.
Anyway, we got our bank account. I think a shared heritage with the banker got us an upgraded business account and waiver of Year 1 fees/balance minimums.
Today, we're putting the last of the BDX in its barrel. This barrel will hold an ullage preventer from FlexTank to take up the headspace as we're short of wine. Since we don't have a pump yet I'm a bit concerned about lifting the demijons of wine to a sufficient height from which we can decant into the barrel. We have to lift 120LBS (55KG) about 5ft (1.5m) onto a filing cabinet that gives us enough height. Before we'd decant from demijon into bottles or gallon jugs directly, but the barrel's bung hole stands at least 4ft (1.2m) off the floor - taller than the demijon in its current setup.
Unfortunately, the labour planning hasn't quite worked out. It just goes to show you that the original plan needs to be stuck to, as you don't know how things will go if you decide to put stuff off to another time. For example, ever since we were all last available when we transferred the wine and did the Winery prep, Marty has been playing catch-up at work and working weekends, Mike H's hospital shifts have taken his weekends, Mike E's children have started some sport that takes the best part of a day, so have Anton's, and Anton got screwed up with having to go to NY and then not getting back until Friday a.m. and I've have a guest staying, Daniella, and had people over the prior weekend.
I'm not moaning though. One thing we all wanted out of this Winery thing was NOT to create an anti-family environment (like Day Job) and that we would be flexible around our family and flexible in general. Everyone does pull together and everyone contributes as best they can. In fact, we've been very good at doing stuff and this is really the only time we've had a labour shortage, which is only felt as such due to the work we want to do - if all we were doing was tasting and bottling, no problem though. And my shoulder is worrying me as I may not be able to contribute if it "goes" on the decanting. If we had the pump, again, "no problem".
Maybe I can just sanitise the bungs that finally came through from Barrel Builders? They supplied these free of charge, so I offered to pay postage, but no postage is stated on the box or packing slip. Maybe I should just send them a cheque? What do you think? But I want to wait to use a Via Vecchia Winery LLC cheque!
