(Left to Right Anton, Paolo, Marty - primary fermentation in background) This Blog setup with AdSense ain't that straightforward. You can preview the changes and it will look OK, but then the published blog looks different. In fact, after getting that sidebar lookin ordered (if not actually good) when I go in today, it's all screwed up. I cannot figure out how to get rid of the huge empty space on the sidebar above all the links, profiles and advertising. I'm not confident that the Preview function actually works since changes are not reflected real-time. This is obviously a work-in-progress.
Wine Stuff.
SanGiovese & X - checked it out on Saturday. Topped it up with a whole bottle! Checked the S02, which is still an acceptable 40ppm (down from 50ppm). I'll need to sulfite soon and therefore need the ph kit as I want to sulfite based on acidity and not a blind target of 35-45ppm.
I hope the barrel stops drinking the wine soon.
BDX (barrel 1) - this lost about a bottle too. Since we have no spare top-up, I put in the 30L ullage preventer. Checking it yesterday, the barrel drank another 100ml! The S02 remains at 40/45ppm.
BDX (barrel2) - no discernible loss (?). I think air pressure distorts the reading: a high pressure day results in lower readings, which bouce back on a low pressure day. For consistency of reading then, ensure readings are taken on days of equal barometric pressure. Makes sense.
If you're wondering what he's going on about, make a simple barometer and see the changes I'm talking about. Take a glass, cover the top with a balloon (cut out a piece and stretch it over the top). Then watch the balloon skin get pushed into the glass on high pressure days and form a little bubble above the glass' profile on low pressure days. For best results, make the barometer on an average day, so you'll notice results better on rainy or hotter days.
We are also out of Bottle X wine from 2004. The last 3 went to Marty's parents as payment for the commercial sink they gave us. Of these last 3 (I know because I tasted then as I swapped them into clean bottles), 1 was "dodgy", 1 was OK and 1 was good. So I supplemented this with a bottle of store bought and told his dad that if they turned out rubbish, we'd "pay" him out of what's in the barrel now.

Bill Nye? Who he? Some cultural icon I missed out on, obviously.
