Ernest Gallo

As fellow winemakers we would like to take this opportunity to mark the occassion of the passing of Ernest Gallo.
Gallo, known for his old world manners and aggressive business tactics, kickstarted the Californian wine industry with his brother, Julio, and by the 1970s had made good progress with straightforward wines in line with his vision to make wine readilly accessible to the people. Many of you may remember "Thunderbird", for example, and his innovative efforts with combining grape with citrus juice to make "Bartles and James" wine coolers.
Gallo was self taught; I heard him on a NPR radio interview recently talking about his start in the industry and getting the book on wine making from his local library.
Since then Gallo has developed 40 labels and grown to be the #2 global wine producer, active in 90 countries with production being 75,000,000 cases of wine (2006) and revenues of US$980,000,000 (2005), producing @ 2,640,000 bottles a day.
Now that's a legacy.
