Cork or Screw & Welcome to New Visitors

Now I can quite easily lower the tone on how I phrase this, but the question was asked by Kelly ( OR), on whether we're going to go "screw cap" or cork? (the best rude way of phrasing this question wins "something").

Of late this has become very topical with many a published opinion, but for now Via Vecchia Winery will use corks, whether of best 5-ring quality or made up of cork pieces (agglomerated?). We will not be doing screw cap. I believe we would also entertain plastic corks, but forget what we said about that... it has been a while.

There are many theories out there on which solution is best for preserving quality, and which is best from guarding against unwanted bacterias and growths, but all that aside, would you use a renewable source (at face value and not going into the ins and outs of this) and was bio-degradable or one that introduced more non-degradable stuff to the landfill?

From a buyer's perspective, which would you buy for the dinner table, or as a gift and which would you buy for a casual party or for yourself? And be honest, would you avoid wines with screw caps and how would you react to a $30+ bottle of wine with a screw cap? Is the gut reaction to screw caps one of "cheapo plonk?"

[at this point I digressed an went off into a world of chemically adjusted wines tasting of wood and longing to go to next year's Vini Veri (true wines) festival in Italy with our wine. But I deleted it and spared you all]

So, Comments Are Welcome - Even the French are going with it - well, they have always had screw caps , just go into any Mamout store and check out what the Vin de Table's in.

Welcome to New Visitors!
As expected, Oregon made an appearance in the guise of visitors from Portland.
Pennsylvania too - Philadelphia & Narberth.
Maine - South Portland
New York - Canton
Rhode Island - Warwick (I'd say "worrick" as in Dionne Warwick and Warwick castle, but then I say "garidge" for "garage" which is apparently correct according to Anton's research on pronouncing "Meritage")
California - San Leandro

And Further Afield..!
Estonia again, this time from Tallinn
India, Maharashtra represented by the fine city of Bombay
Romania and city of Galati (nice football team)
Canada, Manitoba, city of Plum Coulee (mmm, tasty).

Being one of those people who love good wine and is willing to plunk down $30.oo for a bottle, I was totally dismayed when I recently bought my favorite wine and found a screw top on it instead of the traditional cork! I felt cheated. Gone was that wonderful ceremony of piercing the cork and carefully removing it from the neck of the bottle. Gone was that first wonderful scent of wine soaked cork. After the disappointment, I noticed that the aroma of the wine was still wonderful and a first sip indicated that it was good, it didn't taste metallic as I feared it would, but the disappointment was bitter. Is this what is going to happen to all wines, this cheap, quick fix? Are we going to go "fast food" with our wines? And how are we supposed to store our bottles, on their sides with the wine resting against rubber and metal? Or upright which really goes against the grain....
